One person died shortly before 7:00 a.m. Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash by the intersection of South Dakota Highway 20 and 450th Avenue, a quarter mile northwest of Watertown.
According to Tony Mangan of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, a 2009 Ford Focus was westbound on South Dakota Highway 20 when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound 2020 Cascadia Freightliner. Both vehicles went into the north ditch.
The 21-year-old male driver of the Ford Focus was pronounced dead at the scene. The 57-year-old male driver of the Freightliner was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. The identity of the drivers has not yet been released.
That portion of Highway 20 was closed for 3 ½ hours while the investigation was performed.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. They were assisted on-scene by the Codington County Sheriff's Office and Watertown Fire Rescue.
