zebra mussels

The prop on this boat motor at Lake Mead is covered with quagga mussels. Mussels can clog the water intakes on a prop. That can cause the motor to overheat and can seize the motor. The result can be thousands of dollars in repairs

The Board of Directors of the James River Water Development District will meet this week in Yankton. Board Chairman Dan Klimisch of Yankton says they will hear about another unwelcome species that may be spreading in the river.

Most of the James River has been over flood stage since March. Klimisch says a tree removal program years ago has seen some benefits.

Klimisch says they are working with counties and drainage districts on smaller erosion prevention programs.

The board meets Thursday at the Kelly Inn in Yankton
