The South Dakota Department of Health on Thursday released the latest COVID-19 numbers. The death toll climbed to 272 on Thursday, with 14 new deaths reported. Of those deaths, there are six men and eight women. Twelve in the 80+ age range and two in the 60-69 age group.
The deaths reported on Thursday occurred in Bennett, Davison, Jerauld, Lyman, Turner, Gregory, Lincoln and Minnehaha Counties. The Department of Health also reported 536 new COVID cases in the state, bringing the total case count to 26,441.
On Wednesday, the Department of Health added a new category called “probable cases”. A probable case is one where a person has a positive antigen test, which causes COVID-19. Of the 26,441 total cases announced on Thursday, 25,961 are confirmed and 480 are probable cases.
In Codington County on Thursday, 22 new confirmed cases were announced with no probable cases. The county has had 1,053 cases of COVID-19 and 873 recoveries. 69 people have been hospitalized with the virus in the county since the pandemic began.
