The Watertown City Council held a special meeting Monday night and voted to approve a memorandum of understanding between the City of Watertown, Watertown Development Company, J & J Earthworks and Craig Development to build the new two-sheet, multi-purpose ice facility in the area known as the “Lakes of Willow Creek Addition”.  That addition is located just north of Hobby Lobby along Willow Creek Drive.

Councilman Ried Holien, who chairs the Ice Facility Committee, delivered a 30-minute presentation which not only outlined a plan to construct a Multi-Use Facility, but also addressed significant economic development that is anticipated as a result of the construction of the facility.

In an interview with KXLG news, Holien explained the MOU between all of the parties involved in the project......

Holien said the amount of money saved doing the project through the MOU is not known, however it will be significant......

The City of Watertown has explored the idea of building the new ice facility for several years however the project has stalled several times over concerns about the cost of the facility and the city’s ability to finance the project. The most recent plan has gained momentum over the last several months with the formation of an Ice Committee.  Holien said there have been significant donations toward the project and another one is expected soon.....

Former City Councilman Mike Danforth spoke to the council about his thoughts on the new plan......

Following Monday night’s council meeting, Council President Adam Lalim gave praise to the current committee and previous council members, like Danforth, for their work, both past and present, on the project......

The Multi-Use Ice Complex is estimated to cost around $14 million but Holien said the facility could become larger depending on any additional donors that come forward.  The action taken by the council Monday night will finally kick-start the project.......

Holien says if everything goes as planned, Watertown will have their new Multi-Use Ice facility by the end of next year......

The Council voted unanimously to approve the memorandum of understanding with the Watertown Development Company, J & J Earthworks and Craig Development.
