South Dakota set another new record for the number of COVID-19 related deaths in a single day on Saturday. Department of Health officials reported 53 deaths on Saturday and another 23 deaths on Sunday for a total of 76 deaths announced over the weekend.
As of Sunday, South Dakota’s new COVID related death total is 644. With 1,199 cases announced on Sunday, the state’s total active case count is now 19,360 statewide. There have been 45,377 cases listed as recovered and 61,700 total confirmed cases since the pandemic began. Three-thousand Six Hundred Forty four patients have been hospitalized with the virus.
Codington County added 53 new positive cases on Sunday bringing the total confirmed case count to 2,130 with 1,645 of those cases listed as recovered and 552 cases still active. Codington County has seen eight COVID related deaths since last Wednesday bringing the total to 30.
According to the South Dakota Department of Health, as of Sunday afternoon Prairie Lakes Healthcare in Watertown was reporting 20 COVID patients that were hospitalized. Brookings Hospital reported six and Aberdeen Avera St. Luke’s reported 24 patients hospitalized.
