One person died and eight others were injured in a one-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday night east of Murdo.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a 2002 Chevy Suburban, pulling a trailer, was eastbound on Interstate 90 when the driver lost control. The vehicle and trailer went into the ditch and rolled.

The driver and eight passengers all were injured and taken to hospitals in Chamberlain and Pierre and later transferred to Sioux Falls. Seven of the passengers were between the ages of 3 and 15 years of age. Three of them sustained serious non-life threatening injuries, the others suffered minor injuries.

The eighth passenger, a 33-year-old female, who had been thrown from the vehicle, later died as a result of her injuries at a Sioux Falls hospital.

Seat belt use for all of the occupants is under investigation.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
