No people were injured and no surrounding structures were damaged in a fire at one of the Edgewater apartment buildings in Pierre that started around 5:30pm yesterday (Jan. 14).
Pierre Volunteer Fire Department chief Ian Paul says crews are still on scene this morning.
Lutheran Memorial Church opened as shelter for the displaced residents and the American Red Cross found places for the residents to stay overnight.
Paul says the building is a total loss.
He says wind gusts over 40mph sent embers flying around the area of the apartment building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
