An apartment complex garage unit sustained heavy damage in an early Tuesday morning fire in Pierre. Pierre Fire Department Captain Byron Caauwe says firefighters responded to the 400 block of South Central Avenue just after midnight.

Caauwe says firefighters made an aggressive attack on the fire from an alley located almost directly behind the Pierre Fire Department headquarters at Station One. A resident indicated to firefighters their pet dog was in one of the attached garage stalls.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Caauwe says it appears accidental and is not considered to be suspicious at this time. Crews were on scene around two and a half hours. Fort Pierre Fire, A-M-R Ambulance and law enforcement assisted Pierre firefighters at the scene.
