Watertown Police responded to the intersection of 10th Street NW and SD Highway 20 for a motor vehicle accident Friday night at 7:10pm.  The crash involved a Trooper from the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

According to Police, the 38 year old male Trooper was traveling southbound on SD Highway 20 in a 2019 Dodge Charger and turned the patrol car around to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling northbound on SD Highway 20.

As the Trooper was traveling northbound on SD Highway 20 catching up to the violator vehicle, a 1992 Chevrolet 1500 operated by a 79 year old male, had stopped at the stop sign on 10th Street NW at the intersection of SD Highway 20. The pickup began turning left (southbound) onto SD Highway 20 and collided with the patrol vehicle.

Both drivers had minor injuries and later sought medical treatment. The damage to the patrol vehicle is estimated at $4,000 and the damage to the pickup is estimated at $2,000.

The crash remains under investigation by the Watertown Police Department and charges are pending.  Police were assisted on-scene by Watertown Fire Rescue.
