Barry Hillestad

A long-time friend of KXLG Radio has retired after 23 years of law enforcement service. Barry Hillestad retired from his career in Law Enforcement on Tuesday. Hillestad’s law enforcement career began in Waubay in 1997……

Hillestad graduated from the South Dakota Law Enforcement Training Academy in 1998 and worked in Waubay for 4.5 years before accepting a position as a Deputy Sheriff in Day County, where he worked for Sheriff Doug Nelson……

In 2018, Hillestad was preparing to retire when he was contacted by Roberts County Commissioners and asked if he would consider being the interim sheriff.  He accepted the position and has been there since that time.

In November, Hillestad ran for re-election to the position of Sheriff but the bid was unsuccessful. Now, Hillestad says, he is looking forward to enjoying family and finishing up some projects around the house…..

Hillestad said one of his proudest career accomplishments was his involvement with the South Dakota Sheriff’s Association.  He was instrumental in the creation of a statewide response team that responds to in-the-line of duty deaths. One of those, involved the killing of Turner County Deputy Chad Mechels on Sunday March 15, 2009……

Hillestad says he has no regrets…...
