Skywest plans to continue with air service to both Watertown and Pierre, even after their Essential Air Service contract ends on July 1st.
The EAS contract was awarded earlier this year to Denver Air Connection by the U.S. Department of Transportation however, that doesn’t necessarily mean that air service from Skywest will stop.
Although the airline will not fly under the contract they can still service both Watertown and Pierre as an "at-risk" carrier meaning they will not receive a federal subsidy to do it.
A press release received by Mayor Sarah Caron's office on Wednesday afternoon said the following, "SkyWest has provided the following statement regarding the airline’s plans for the future at Watertown Regional Airport: “SkyWest Airlines has not indicated any plans to discontinue service at Watertown. Customers can continue to book SkyWest/United Airlines with confidence beyond June 30.”
