The Watertown Laker Girls 14U Hockey team started the season like every other season, just glad to be playing hockey. The team is made up of 12 players and is coached by Ryan Linke as the Head Coach and Brandon Henman as the Assistant. Coach Linke said he knew this year was going to be a rebuilding year for the team….
Being a new team made up of new players, Linke knew the season would be challenging but knew the only way they would get better was through practice, which was not easy for the girls…..
Linke said despite being a rebuilding season, he had high hopes for the team……
The girls continued to train and practice hard while learning the basics and the fundamentals of hockey. Each game was difficult and it seemed as though they just couldn’t catch a break……..
Despite their season record, the girls were excited to go to the state tournament in Mitchell to see what they could do. The first game was against #2 Sioux Falls….
The team lost their first game 6-1 and the season looked like it was going to end the same way it began, with losses.....but then something changed…
The game went into double overtime……
Rylie Redlin said the feeling of shooting the winning goal was amazing…..
Angelyn Birnell said their hearts dropped when Redlin hit the winning goal….
The girls then went into game three with Pierre. Linke said after winning the second game the pressure was off the team and they began having fun and playing well. They beat Pierre, 5-4. When the tournament was over the girls had placed 5th in the tournament and had won the consolation championship.
Kayla Randall said she is proud of the team and their abilities as a young team…..
