The Watertown Police Department and Fire Rescue were dispatched to a hit and run injury accident at the intersection of 1st Ave NE and 5th St NE shortly before 7:30 Sunday night.
Polce say a 2011 Dodge Durango driven by Oscar Gutierrez Arana was Northbound on 5th St NE when the vehicle entered the intersection of 1st Ave NE and 5th St and struck a 2016 Ford Fusion driven by Melissa Sutton who was traveling eastbound on 1st Ave NE. Police say according to witness’s the Dodge Durango did not stop for the red light at the intersection.
The Durango then fled the scene of the crash driving at high rate of speed and in a reckless manner. An officer performed a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 2800 block of 9th Ave SE. The driver was arrested for DUI, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Reckless Driving Driving without a License, Failure to Obey a Traffic Signal and Failure to Stop for Law Enforcement. He was transported to the Codington County Detention Center.
Both the driver and occupants of the Ford Fusion were evaluated on scene by Watertown Fire Rescue.
