A well-known South Dakota Senator has announced that he will be seeking re-election to the South Dakota Senate. Senator Lee Schoenbeck, an attorney and owner of Schoenbeck Law Office in Watertown, says he enjoys representing the community in the Senate and he wants to go back.
Schoenbeck was elected to the State Senate in 2018 after a two year break from the South Dakota Legislature.
Schoenbeck says education funding is important and he recognizes the value of Lake Area Tech and the ability to support the staff and the growth of the school remains a top priority….
Not only at the college level, but K-12 funding is also a big issue that Schoenbeck says he will remain focused on.
Schoenbeck continues to be an advocate for municipal electric providers such as Watertown Municipal Utilities. In November, he was the lone member of a legislative committee to vote against a compromise that would have limited annexation powers of Municipal Electric Companies.
Senator Schoenbeck says he thinks this ideation of the bill will get killed this session however the fight most likely isn’t over.……
Schoenbeck has been in South Dakota politics for over 6 decades and he describes himself as a political junkie. He says he is proud to serve in the South Dakota Senate and looks forward to going back. He credits his family for being supportive. He tells KXLG News that being away from home for long periods of time is not an easy thing to do…..
Schoenbeck served in the Senate from 1995 to 1996 and again from 2003 to 2006, each time holding leadership positions. He served in the State House of Representatives in 2015 and 2016 before take a break and returning to the State Senate in 2018.
Schoebeck and his wife, Donna have four adult children.
He is the first District 5 Senate Candidate to publicly announce his candidacy.
