South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem issued a video on Thursday proposing a path forward for legalizing industrial hemp production. Noem says that things have changed……

Governor Noem thinks she won’t veto a hemp bill provided it contains four “Guardrails” she offered to lawmakers…

District 5 Legislator Nancy York, of Watertown, says that if hemp is legalized, there are many different pieces that must be put into place first. York sat on the Hemp Summer Study Committee in Pierre.  She was the lone vote against draft legislation on the hemp bill in early December. She said at that committee meeting although the bill was well written, the concern of legalizing hemp as a gateway to the legalization of marijuana meant she could not support the bill.

In an interview with KXLG News, York said she hasn’t had anyone tell her we need to have hemp legalized…

York says that although the governor has now said she would support the legalization of industrial hemp if the bill contains the four “Guardrails,” York said she stands by her vote….

York says that there are a lot of associated costs with the legalization of hemp and there remains a lot of unanswered questions if it was to pass.
