South Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson, for the final time Wednesday gave his annual State of the Judiciary message to a joint session of the South Dakota Legislature. Gilbertson is set to retire on January 5, 2021. Gilbertson says programs that were not available a few years ago such as the DUI and Drug Court programs have been successful, saving lives as well as taxpayer dollars.
Because of the success of these programs, Gilbertson is encouraging further expansion of these programs…
Gilbertson says a major concern of his is the high number of females in prison today for drug related offenses…..
Gilbertson had high praise for the three drug court programs in the state, one of which is right here in Codington County…..
Gilbertson also talked about the expansion of programs to bring lawyers to rural parts of South Dakota, making sure high-quality students are graduating from the University Of South Dakota Law School and the expansion during his time as Chief Justice of rules to bring expanded electronic coverage of circuit court proceedings to the media.
