The Watertown Board of Adjustment met last night with one item on the agenda that has been a contentious one between Lake Kampeksa homeowners and the developers, Mike Lawrence and Bob and Pam Drake. In December, the city council approved a request to rezone a 35-acre parcel of land located between South Dakota Highway 20 and North Lake Drive from agricultural to Commercial Highway.
Lawrence and the Drakes would like to build a campground at the location. During the public hearing portion of the meeting Thursday night a few lake residents expressed their opposition to the project citing an increase in traffic and loud noise. Besides Lawrence, no proponents spoke on the project.
One of those speaking in opposition of the development was Brent Wookey. Wookey lives on North Lake Drive in the area of the proposed development. Wookey tells KXLG news he has a few concerns…..
Those who support that project have said that the plan would make Lake Kampeska more attractive to those visiting our area and give campers another option.
Mike Lawrence tells KXLG News that it has not been an easy process to get this far……
Some of the concerns among homeowners at Lake Kampeska, including Wookey, are centered around the amount of traffic and the safety of pedestrian in the area. Lawrence said if that a problem the city needs to take a look at that….
After discussion among the board members the approval request was approved unanimously.
